Our Values

Hummingbird Home Care uses the following values to guide all decisions to be made by every employee when faced with decisions and actions:

Service

We will bring hospitality to internal and external customers and this will measure our success. We define hospitality as the genuine desire to make someone feel welcome, comfortable and to share our "table" with them, a generous and giving nature, being good company and the ability to efficiently meet and anticipate the needs of our clients and coworkers.

Excellence

With every word and deed we will be excellent.

Harmony in Communication

Harmony requires compassion which leaves no room for gossip. We will communicate directly with any individual we have a concern with. If any person we speak with is not part of the problem or the solution, we will direct the conversation to whom the subject involves. We will take no offense to any fellow employee who reminds us of this value we hold vital to a healthy work environment.

Relationships

We will recognize and honor the basic human needs of clients and employees. Love, acceptance, and empathy will guide our action and communication.

Biography for Joan M. Thompson RN

Joan M. Thompson lives in Newcastle, Maine with her husband William M. Thompson, Architect. She has a daughter, Christabelle who lives in Florida and is attending college pursuing a nursing degree. Her son Nate is a senior in high school and a volunteer firefighter.

Joan was born in Maine and has lived on the coast of Maine all her life. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from the University of Southern Maine.

For 14 years, Joan has worked in home care. She worked as a certified nursing assistant and home health aide while pursuing her degree in nursing. She started Hummingbird Home Care in 2004 and has an excellent staff of Personal Service Professionals who work with her to preserve the dignity and independence of Maine's elders.

Joan believes in the power of home to feed the soul. Her goal is to support and preserve the lifestyle of elders to they can remain at home safely.

She believes strongly that elders should not be warehoused in nursing homes but live in small groups in country houses or historic inns where the smell of home made bread and cookies waft through the house, the hum of the community is within walking distance, the laughter of children is heard nearby and birds can seen out the window.

She believes that children need the presence of elders in their lives just as much as elders need the presence of children.Ê Recreating the "intergenerational" household is the intention of Joan and her husband as they seek funding to create soulful homes for Maine's elders who could benefit from sharing life with a small group of friends.

As the president of the Maine Personal Assistance Services Association, Joan is a strong advocate for the men and women who work daily in the lives of elders to protect their dignity, provide love and warmth and a peaceful environment. These Personal Service Professionals pride themselves in possessing and employing the skills necessary to support, respect and comfort Maine's elders as the live the last chapters of their lives.
